A rise in the number of Britons packing up their clubs and golf GPS systems and heading to Cumbria for 18 holes is expected over the next month, following the announcement of a new initiative in the area.
According to reports from The North West Evening Mail, golf clubs in Ulverston, Furness, Barrow and Silecroft are set to participate in the Get Into Golf scheme, which will offer free coaching sessions to those new to the game and who have not played for a long time but want to get back into it.
The programme - established by the Cumbria Golf Partnership - aims to develop the sport within the county, with six free lessons being organised for each club.
Attendees will be able to improve everything from their basic swing and putting to bunker play and pitching.
Commenting on the news, Jane Robinson, the organisation's county development officer, said: "Golf is a sport that can be enjoyed by all ages and abilities and this scheme will help those interested in trying the sport enjoy some top quality coaching without it costing them a penny."
"For those who might have played the game when they were younger, this scheme also gives an opportunity to brush up on their old skills and rediscover their love of golf.
"As well as the sporting challenge of playing the game, it is a great way of meeting new people, enjoying a healthy lifestyle out in the fresh air and a thriving social scene, especially if you go on to become a member of a golf club."
And it could be that keen golfers looking to improve their game over the summer decide to invest in a golf GPS device, which helps the player by providing onscreen information on the par of the hole, distance to back, centre and front of the green, as well as hazards.
