Branden Grace clinched the Joburg Open with a level-par 72 in the final round to deny Englishman Jamie Elson winning his first European tour title by one shot.
Elison finished with a remarkable nine-under-par 63, giving him the lead for much of the afternoon. However his wait for a mistake from Grace proved in vain as the South African calmly slotted away to victory at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington’s East Course.
Apart from the lone victory in the Finnish Open in 2003, Elison has so far failed to fulfil the promise he showed during his early days when he was on the same Walker Cup team as Nick Dougherty and Luke Donald.
But this recent run of form in South Africa this month proves Elison could be one to watch in the future, with the Englishman picking up a cheque for 123,000 - more than double his previous winnings.
Meanwhile a victorious Grace commented on his maiden European Tour title stating, “This is a dream come true, it’s nice to win in front of my home crowd, I wouldn’t change it for anything else”.
Tied for third, two behind Elson, were a group of six players on 14 under including Scottish duo David Drysdale and Marc Warren, as well as four more South Africans Fisher Jnr, Dawie Van der Walt, Jaco Van Zyl and Michael Bothma.
