SEVEN speed camera sites cost 46,000 motorists fines of £2.7million in a year — for breaking temporary limits.
One stretch of road landed drivers with bills totalling more than £1million, official figures reveal.
And the seven sites ran up 137,000 points on the licences of motorists.
Cameras on the A38 near Lichfield, Staffs, brought in the seven-figure sum in fines — as 15,300 ignored the temporary 40mph restriction.
And 12,976 drivers had to pay £800,000 on the A419 outside Swindon when the limit was cut by roadworks from 70mph.
Gatsos on Weaver Viaduct, Cheshire, nabbed 6,158 and four months of works on the A583 in Preston, Lancs, saw 6,355 fail to slow to 30mph.
A month of repairs on the M6 near Corley, Warwicks, snared 2,000 speedsters while the same road in Staffs saw 1,546 drivers ignore a 50mph limit.
Concern
A temporary 40mph limit on the M26 in Kent was snubbed by 1,493.
The Speed Camera Safety Partnerships, who released the figures, said: “We are concerned that drivers seem to think temporary speed limits are advisory and do not have to be obeyed.
“Our message is clear: the limit starts where drivers see the first signs — which will be before the works start.”
DRIVERS are to be shamed into slowing up by smart signs
that flash up number plates. The signs will be tried out on London-bound drivers on the busy
A12 near Colchester, Essex.
