English golfer Lee Westwood is set to return to the US PGA tour next year. This comes after the world number 3 was noticeably absent from The Players' Championship in May. It was reported that the 38-year-old would rather be spending time with his family than playing in the FedEx Cup plays in August, however it appears that the former world number one has changed his mind.
Speaking of the championship, Westwood said "I missed The Players Championship last year when watching it on television. It was always a scheduling issue for me".
"Though the rules changed making it exempt from PGA Tour restrictions, I had already set my schedule for later in the year in Asia. I didn't want to break any of those commitments. It's a great event and one I've always enjoyed playing".
"The FedEx Cup looked pretty good on television this year, and I thought it would be great to give it a go, having never taken part."
The announcement means that Westwood will be obliged to take part in a minimum of 15 events in the US, the first of which will be the WGC Matchplay in Arizona in February 2012. A spokesperson for the player has said that his European Tour commitments will be unaffected.
The news has pleased PGA Tour executive vice-president Andy Pazder, who said: 'We are delighted to welcome back Lee as a member of the PGA Tour.
"He's obviously proven himself to be one of the very best and most consistent players in the world, and the fans of the PGA Tour will enjoy having more opportunities to watch him compete."
Those hoping to keep up with the tour in 2012 may wish to purchase a golf gps. The innovative devices are an effective way to improve skills and enhance knowledge.
