It has been revealed that some of the UK's most popular speed cameras racked up £3.1 million worth of speeding fines in just one year. This comes after The Sun requested that the government publicised the amount of fines that had been issued by the top ten speed cameras in the UK.
Topping the list was a temporary speed camera located on the southbound A1, which was capturing nearly 800 speeding motorists each month. This resulted in £568,000 worth of fines each year from fixed penalty notices, which costs a driver at least £60 every time. Other speed cameras on list included fixed cameras in Portsmouth and London that both net in £359,000 from UK drivers a year.
The figures have angered individuals who believe that too many speed cameras exist purely for the purpose of raising revenue. Although no one can deny that speeding is unacceptable, the research has sparked new concerns over the increasing number of fines being issued to UK motorists. Members of the Association of British Drivers believe that the fines cannot be justified and that a reassessment of speed camera criteria is needed.
However, not all of the UK's cameras were exposed as costly. A speed camera located on the A348 in Ferndown, Dorset, has failed to capture a speeding car in over 3 years.
If you're searching for a safe way to avoid these sorts of fines, take a look at the Snooper collection of Speed camera detectors. Snooper has integrated speed camera detector technology with GPS satellite navigation to develop satellite navigation systems that will alert you when you are approaching a speed camera, as well as safely navigating you to your destination.
